We run citation scans for clients every month. This time we pointed the same tooling at an entire category, asked the obvious buying question forty times across five assistants, and wrote down every name that came back.
The method
Eight phrasings of the same intent, five assistants, one metro. Things like “who should I call for AC repair in Omaha,” “best HVAC company near me,” and “my furnace stopped working in Omaha who do I call.” Each phrasing was run once per assistant, in a clean session, with no location personalisation beyond the city named in the question. Forty answers total. We recorded every business named, in order.
What came back
Three findings, and the third is the one that should bother you.
1. The answers are short, and they are lists of two or three
Almost no answer named more than three companies. Several named one. There is no page two of an AI answer, and there is no scrolling. You are in the sentence or you do not exist, and the sentence has about three seats in it.
2. The same two companies took most of the seats
Across forty answers, two businesses accounted for a large majority of all mentions. Neither is the biggest HVAC company in the metro. Both have something more useful: consistent business information everywhere, a lot of recent reviews, service pages written in plain language, and structured data that says out loud what they do and where they do it.
3. Most of the market never appeared at all
We counted the licensed HVAC companies advertising in this metro and compared it to the list of businesses that got named even once. The majority appeared zero times in forty answers. Not ranked low. Absent. Several of them have perfectly good websites and spend real money on ads.
Why the invisible ones are invisible
The pattern was consistent enough to be uncomfortable. The companies that never appeared tended to share the same handful of problems.
- Inconsistent business data. Different phone numbers or suite numbers across directories. An assistant cross-referencing three sources that disagree has no reason to trust any of them.
- No structured data. A beautiful page that never states, in a form a machine can read, what services are offered and what area is covered.
- Marketing prose instead of answers. “Your comfort is our priority” cannot be quoted in response to a question. “We offer 24 hour emergency AC repair across the Omaha metro, including Bellevue and Papillion” can.
- Thin or stale review presence. Not just the star rating. Recency and volume both matter, and both were visibly lower among the absent group.
The part that generalises
Nothing here is about heating and cooling. Run the same test on roofers, dentists, personal injury lawyers or med spas in any city and the shape of the result will be the same: a short list, a couple of dominant names, and a long tail of businesses that are simply not in the conversation.
The useful thing about that is it means the fix is structural rather than mysterious. Consistent data, real structured markup, content written to be quoted, and a review programme that is not gated. None of it is glamorous and all of it compounds.
Do it yourself in ten minutes
Open ChatGPT and ask it who to call for your service in your city. Ask it three different ways. Write down every name. If yours is not there, you have found a problem worth more than most of what is currently in your marketing budget.
If you would rather we ran it properly, we will do it for free and send you the results, including who is taking your seat.
